EASY HOMEMADE BREAD
This is a quick and easy homemade bread recipe that you can pair with any salad or soup! Please note this recipe is for oven baked bread only.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
- 1/3 cup white granulated sugar
- 1 package of active dry yeast or 1 1/2 TBS
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 5-6 cups all purpose or bread flour
Directions:
- Preheat oven to warm setting or to 100 degrees.
- Add yeast to 2 cups of warm water ( too hot will kill the yeast)
- Allow the yeast to proof. The yeast will resemble a creamy foam, and should take about 5 minutes.
- Add the salt, sugar, and oil into the yeast. Mix in flour one cup at a time.
- Knead dough for 7 minutes using your hands or a mixer using the kneading attachment on your mixer
- Lightly oil a new bowl . Shape the dough into a ball and turn the dough to coat
- Cover the dough with a cloth and allow the bread to rise until doubled. This will take about 1 hour or longer.
- Keep the bread near or in the warm oven to speed up the rising process. During the cooler months the bread takes longer to rise. Pre-heating the oven and creating a warm environment for the bread will allow it rise quicker. You can also place the dough near a window in the summer to allow the sun to help the loaf rise.
- After the dough has risen punch the dough down. Knead for 1 minute and divide in half. Shape into two loaves and place in two greased 9×5 inch loaf pans. If you do not have a loaf pan you can shape the dough into a loaf and place on a greased cookie sheet.
- Allow the bread to rise for an additional 30 minutes to an hour. The dough should rise 1in above the pan before baking.
- Bake the bread at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. The bread should be golden brown.
- Cool, brush with smart balance original butter, and enjoy!
Tips/Tricks: Keep the bread in a warm environment when letting it rise. Also make sure to proof the yeast if you are using active dry yeast. If you use instant yeast you can combine everything all together.
Diane always remembers her Grandmother baking bread when she was a child. Diane always reminded Stevie how important it is to connect with the bread as you kneed it. Stevie is known for waking up before the sun rises to bake a fresh loaf of bread or even to just let it rise all morning. Everyone in the family looks forward to this easy bread when she makes it.
